Utah is a point-of-contact state, so the check goes to the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification, which searches state criminal history and juvenile court records along with the federal databases; a Utah concealed firearm permit does not take its place. Since May 5, 2021, an adult 21 or older who may lawfully possess a firearm can carry it in Utah, loaded, concealed or openly, with no permit. The Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification still issues the concealed firearm permit statewide, and a county sheriff does not. The permit runs five years and needs a course from a BCI-certified instructor covering Utah law and safe handling, with no live-fire test. Residents aged 18 to 20 can apply for a provisional permit. Secure airport areas, courthouses, jails, federal buildings and posted private property stay off-limits.
The Division of Wildlife Resources sets general-season dates statewide and splits the state into deer units. For 2026 the general-season buck deer archery hunt opens August 15, the muzzleloader hunt runs September 23 to October 1 and the any legal weapon hunt runs October 17 to 25. General bull elk any-weapon hunts run October 3 to 9 and October 10 to 16, with spike-only October 3 to 15 and muzzleloader October 28 to November 5. Salt Lake County straddles the Wasatch Mountains, West general-season deer unit on the east and the Oquirrh-Stansbury unit on the west; check the current guidebook for the boundary. Big and Little Cottonwood canyons are closed to hunting, so valley hunters drive to the Oquirrhs or over the crest.
The Division of Wildlife Resources runs the Lee Kay Public Shooting Range on the west side near the airport, and the Farmington Bay marshes are half an hour north on the lake shore.
The Division of Wildlife Resources runs two public shooting centers, Lee Kay in Salt Lake City and Cache Valley in Logan. Both are open to anyone, charge a range fee and need no hunting license. Utah has no other state-run ranges, so away from those two most target shooting happens on BLM and national forest ground, where it is allowed if done safely and the area is not posted closed.
